People playing the poker for the first time may get confused during a game when they are not familiar with some terms. In these games, there are terms that are only used in the context of the game. To help you understand these terms, here is a crash course on some poker jargons.
Blinds in a poker game refers to the bets that certain players should make even before the cards are dealt. Usually, the players who make these bets are the ones found on the left and the right sides of the dealer. The player on the left gives the small blind while the one on the right is required to pay the big blind.
Board cards, on the other hand, are the ones found in the middles of the table. Everyone in the table share these cards.
Draw is a term used to describe a hand that currently has a low chance of winning but has a good chance of being improved once the board cards are out.
In Hold 'em poker, the first three board cards are called the flop.
Chances are also used in this game. These chances are referred to as pot odds. There is another type of pot odds, which are called the implied odds. This is similar to the usual pot odds. However, it takes into consideration future betting.
Limit poker is a jargon that needs no further explanation. It is simply poker with a fixed amount of bets.
Longhand is another term used in poker. It simply describes a poker game that has seven or more players. On the other hand, a short hand would have six or less players.
Another term that needs to be clarified is the outs. Outs refer to the number of cards that a player could use to improve a drawing hand. For instance, the flop is six of spades, seven of hearts, four of diamonds. Meanwhile the hand consists of five of clubs and a king of hearts. In this case, the outs would be eight since there are four cards with a value of three and four cards with a value of eight that could appear in the community cards.
The word position in the context of poker simply refers to the players' places at the poker table. One should always remember that the best position is that of the dealer's since the dealer gets to bet last. Therefore, the dealer has a better sense of the hands that the opponents would have.
A betting round occurs after two cards are dealt to each player. This is called the pre-flop. Pre-flop takes place before the appearance of the board cards on the table.
In Texas hold'em, the fourth card to appear on the board is called the turn while fifth is the river.
