Buying Poker Chips? Know These Three Types of Materials

A common mistake people commit when buying poker chips is that they just pick out the first set they see at the store. Sure, all poker chips serve the same purpose, so why should one be so picky about it? Two things: cost and purpose.

If you are just buying chips so that you can use one whenever you have a family gathering, then it would not be so wise to buy expensive clay or metal ones. If you want to practice poker chip tricks, then the plastic ones are not a good buy. Through knowing what material of poker chips is suitable for your purpose, you can get more value for your money.

1. Clay poker chips

Clay poker chips are made from clay and a combination of other materials. They are perhaps the most expensive and glamorous chips you can find. They weigh around eight to eleven grams, and have the authentic 39mm casino chip diameter.

If you have a regular poker night and could afford a few bucks, then the clay chips are a good investment. However, if you want to practice poker chip tricks, it may not be so. While these chips are durable, they are still fragile because of clay as its main material. So these may not be the chips that are best for flipping and throwing.

2. Metal poker chips

Metal poker chips have a core made of metal which is enveloped in plastic. It has the same weight and diameter as the clay chips. This chip perhaps has the closest feel to a casino chip. They are not as expensive as the clay ones, but expect to pay still a substantial amount.

This type of poker chip is a good middle mark. It is a good choice for either hardcore poker night or the yearly family reunion. It is the best choice for poker chip tricks, as these are the most durable casino-like chips one can find.

3. Plastic poker chips

Plastic poker chips are the cheapest ones you can find. The diameter and weight of these chips vary, as these are considered as 'toy chips.' Indeed, they can be easily found in toy stores and convenience stores.

If you just want a way to keep score and do not really have a budget, then this is the best deal for you. But don't expect this chip to have the real casino feel or be a good dog in doing poker chip tricks.

If you are collecting chips and have a regular poker night, the clay and metal chips are best. If you want to do fancy tricks, go for metal. If you just want to keep score, then the plastic does it well. Through knowing the material of the poker chips, you can easily choose the one that suits your needs.
